Irene K. Uhl, 84, of Ida Grove, died Friday, December 27, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, following a courageous 12-month battle with cancer.

Irene Kathryn Nielsen Uhl was born February 20, 1926, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Mike and Rose (Petrositch) Nielsen. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic school eight years and was awarded The American Legion Scholastic Award and graduated from Mapleton Public School in 1944. She worked at Lloyd’s Ben Franklin Store and then for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until her marriage to Charles Uhl on February 17, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton. They lived and farmed in the Mapleton-Danbury area until moving to Ida Grove in 1989. In early retirement Irene and Charlie traveled and spent 15 years wintering in the Mesa, Arizona, area. Charlie passed away on April 28, 2009.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Ida Grove.

Irene is survived by her five children, Maurice Uhl and Judy of Atlanta, Georgia; Dr. Marilyn Chalupa and Richard of Muncie, Indiana; Michael and Bonnie Uhl of Lake Ozark, Missouri; and Marc and Jolene Uhl and Marcene and Rick McBride of Danbury. Grandchildren and step grandchildren include Sommer Uhl Turner, Shay Uhl, Jordan Uhl, Neil Chalupa, Michael Uhl Jr., Ashley Uhl, Thomas Uhl, Rochelle McBride Maynard, Kyle McBride and Jessica Jordan. Great grandchildren include Auden Uhl and Max Maynard.

She is also survived by four sisters, Elaine Johnston, Byron, Minnesota; Rita Dahl, Omaha, Nebraska; Evelyn (Clarence) Cameron, Tupelo, Mississippi; Carol Nielsen, Seattle, Washington; and two brothers, Paul (Jeanne) Nielsen, Bellingham, Washington; and Michael Nielsen, Mapleton.

Along with her husband, Irene is preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter; Jenna Irene Chalupa; one sister, Dolores Weatherby; and one brother, Norman Nielsen.

Irene was a caring, warm-hearted person with a very strong faith and made everyone feel welcome. She loved crafts especially crocheting, and loved to cook and bake.

The funeral mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove with Rev. David Hemann officiating, assisted by Deacon Mike Stover. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton and Danbury handled the arrangements.
