ONAWA, Iowa -- Bertha J. Bryan, 89, of Onawa died on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the Longview Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa. The Rev. Don Collison will officiate. Burial will be at the Onawa Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time today at the funeral home.

Bertha June Bryan, daughter of Nathaniel George and Laura Daisy (Martin) Cook, was born June 22, 1920, in Logan, Iowa. She was raised in Palisade, Minn., and attended country school there. After attending school, she worked for area families.

In 1942, Bertha was united in marriage to Merle Carter in Austin, Texas. To this union seven children were born, Harley, Larry, Terry, Doris, Ron, Moris, and Sandy. They lived in Onawa and later divorced.

In 1958, Bertha was united in marriage to Leonard "Skinny" Bryan in Onawa. To this union four children were born, Bruce, Mike, Violet, and Lori. The family made their home in Onawa and Bertha worked in area restaurants. She then worked at Headstart West Central School in Onawa until retiring in 1982.

Bertha enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, sewing, crocheting, reading, fishing, and going to the casino. She especially enjoyed raising her children and being with family.

She is survived by her children, Harley (Diane) Carter of Clarksville, Ark., Larry (Ada) Carter of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Terry (Jan) Carter of McCook Lake, S.D., Doris (Bill) Weber of Tyler, Minn., Ron "Froggie" (Lori) Carter of Onawa, Moris (Pam) Carter of Staples, Minn., Sandy (Tim) Moser of Castana, Iowa, Bruce (Ree) Bryan of Little Sioux, Iowa, Mike (Sandy) Bryan of Onawa, Violet (Gary "Keeby") Mobley of Decatur, Neb., and Lori (Jack) Hollins of Little Sioux; 48 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who were all very special to Bertha; one sister, Marian Larson of Anoka, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husbands; three brothers, Bob, Ike, and Pearl; and three sisters, Louise, Mable, and Goldie.
