G.E. Olson Dies After Suffering A Broken Neck

Working In The Timber Near His Home, When A Tree Fell On Him, Breaking His Neck, And Causing Other Injuries

He was taken to a Sioux City hospital for treatment, where he died on Saturday, February 11. Funeral services were held at Albaton on Tuesday.

George E. Olson, an old and highly respected citizen of the Albaton and Sloan communities, died at a Sioux City hospital on Saturday, February 11, 1956, where he had been taken for treatment of injuries he suffered in an accident which befell him on Wednesday, February 8, when he was helping to cut down some trees on the bar near his farm home. One of the trees fell on Mr. Olson, breaking his neck, and causing other injuries. Mr. Olson, who was 80 years old, could not withstand the shock of the accident and the pain that followed.

He was a man of high character and had been a leader in the community where he had spent his entire life. Only four years ago he retired from the farm and moved into town.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, at Skein Lutheran Church, Albaton, Iowa, for George E. Olson, so lifelong resident of that community. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Woods Funeral Home of Whiting. Rev. Edw. Jordahl officiating at the service at which Mrs. Aileen Brown, of Onawa, sang two vocal solos.

Pallbearers were Kermit Leo, Kendall Hunter, Loyd Nelson, Joy Polly, Mitchell Armstrong and Wally Parker.

George E. Olson was born May 20, 1875 at Albaton, Iowa and passed away February 11, 1956 at a Sioux City hospital after being critically injured on February 8. His parents were John P and Stena Olson, pioneer residents of Fairview Township.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Skien Lutheran Church of which he remained a member until his death.

On September 7, 1898, he married Mary Johnson and to this union ten children were born; two passing away in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Olson retired from farming four years ago and moved to Sloan. On September 7, 1955 they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary with their family at their home.

He is survived by his widow, Mary; three sons, Harry and Elliott, both of Sloan and Robert of Sioux City; five daughters, Mrs. Grace Swanson and Mrs. Mal Jacobson of Sloan, Mrs. Carrie S??lien of Moorhead, Iowa. Mrs. Al Carter of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs. June Armstrong of Los Angeles, California; twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, three brothers, Gus of Whiting, Iowa, John of Sloan and Len of Hawthorne, California; also two sisters, Mrs. Ina Haakinson, St Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Stella Allisor, Hawthorne, California.

Two brothers, Kenneth Olson, Whiting, Iowa and Will of Los Angeles, Calif. And one sister Mrs. Julia Olson of Sloan preceded him in death.
