DAKOTA CITY -- Lawrence G. McManis, 81, of Dakota City passed away on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at a Sioux City care center.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Ron Keith officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa, with military honors by the U.S. Coast Guard. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Lawrence G. McManis, son of Joe and Cecil McManis, was born on Jan. 11, 1928, in Moorhead, Iowa. Lawrence and his sister, Florine, grew up on a farm near Moorhead. He graduated from Moorhead High School and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945. He was stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska, and completed his service in 1948.

After completing his service, Lawrence was united in marriage to Mary Pauline Minnich. They returned to Iowa and Lawrence attended Iowa State University. After graduating with a degree in agriculture, he farmed for several years in Iowa and Nebraska. During this time, they reared four children, Arlene, Larry, Joe and Jim. He was actively involved with his family in sports, 4-H and school. After farming for years, they settled in Dakota City and Lawrence worked and retired as a refrigeration engineer at Sioux City Cold Storage.

After retirement, he enjoyed his family, gardening, sports and working on his house. In his later years, he enjoyed the company of his family and some very special nurses. He most enjoyed his weekly trip to Red Lobster for lunch and will be lovingly remembered by all.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Arlene McManis of Plattsmouth, Neb., Larry (Cindy) McManis of Stoughton, Wis., Joe (Kelli) McManis of Omaha and Jim (Kathleen) McManis of Lincoln, Neb.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Florine (Art) Holverson of Phoenix, Ariz.; nieces; nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Pauline McManis in 2004; his mother, Arlene; and his parents, Joe and Cecil McManis.
