SIOUX CITY - Arnold Malkin, 89, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City and Youngstown, Ohio, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Youngstown.

Arnold was born July 22, 1920, in Youngstown, the son of Jacob and Sophie (Rappaport) Malkin. He spent his younger years in Youngstown. After graduation from high school, he attended college at Columbia, Stanford and Notre Dame.

In 1942, he and his twin brother, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His basic training took place in Texas, where he received his Bombardier Wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He served in Europe, assigned to the 8th Air Force, 95th Bomb Group and flew in 11 missions to Germany, where his plane was shot down. He spent 14 months in a P.O.W. camp in Barth, Germany (Stalag Luft 1). He was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He was later promoted to major in the reserves.

He moved to Sioux City in the middle of the 1970s and had been a resident of Onawa since 2002.

Survivors include his loving companion, Lois Harris of Onawa; Lois' children, Kevin Harris and his wife, Deb and family and Cheryl and her husband, Gordon Fleming and family, all of Blair, Neb.; a brother and his wife, Dr. Walter and Audrey Malkin of Youngstown; a sister-in-law, Jennie Malkin of Youngstown; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Myron; and an infant sister, Louise.
