BLENCOE, Iowa -- Louise Carlson, 90, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Blencoe, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blencoe United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Mary Wells officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Louise Louceitta was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Glenwood, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Pearl (Scott) Shaw. She graduated from Charter Oak (Iowa) High School in 1936. In the fall of 1936, the family moved to Blencoe. She taught at Blencoe Country School from 1937 to 1941.

She and Merrill Roy Carlson were united in marriage on Nov. 1, 1941, in Blencoe. Merrill served in the U.S. Army and she followed him to his stateside stations until he was sent overseas. After his discharge, they made their home in Blencoe, where they raised their family. Merrill passed away Jan. 21, 2000.

She was a longtime member of Blencoe United Church of Christ. She lived her life devoted to her husband and children. She spent her time helping with farming, working in the garden and caring for her family. During the couple's later years in life, they enjoyed traveling together. She involved herself in the community and served in church offices, Women's Auxiliary and Book Club. She loved to do needle work and created many memorable pieces kept by her children. She loved to cook for her family, and her house was her palace.

Survivors include her three children, Dennis (Cathy) Carlson of Hampton, Iowa, and their children, Michelle Hartman, Kelly Rolland and Benjamin Carlson, Douglas (Carolyn) Carlson of Copenhagen, N.Y., and their children, Andy, Jane and Mark Carlson, and Jeanette (Brian) Thomas of Marion, Iowa, and their children, Bobbi Brunner and Brenda Diaz; four great-grandchildren, Hope and Ivy Hartman and Hannah and Leah Brunner; and two brothers, Ralph Shaw of Mesa, Ariz., and Richard Shaw of Lincoln, Neb.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Eythel Cunningham and Annetta King; and a brother, Kenneth Shaw.

Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Research Foundation or Burgess Hospice.
