BLENCOE, Iowa -- Kenneth E. Comfort, 78, of Blencoe died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Blencoe, with the Rev. Donald J. Slaven officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Monona County Post 2694 and the U.S. Navy. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Kenneth was born April 21, 1923, in Blencoe, the son of Richard U. and Henrietta E. (Boyd) Comfort. He was raised in the Blencoe area and graduated from Blencoe High School in May 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy in June 1941 and served 20 years. He was on a submarine during World War II, which sank three enemy submarines over a 72-hour period.

He was married to Doris Irene Metivier on March 22, 1945, in Norwich, Conn. Following his discharge in 1961, he was a policeman at New London Submarine Base, Conn. He then moved to Knoxville, Iowa, where he was employed in refrigeration and air conditioning until his retirement in 1982, when the couple retired to Blencoe.

He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Stevens Kelley Post 665 of Blencoe, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Monona County Post 2694. He served as president of Senior Citizen Task Force and was a council member in Blencoe.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; a son, Donald of Norwich, Conn.; a grandson and his wife, Kenneth and Mary Comfort; two granddaughters, Carrie Sullivan and Caryon Rhouddou; three brothers and their wives, Merle and Theo of Omaha, and Donald "Tim" and Eddie Jo, and John and Joyce, all of Blencoe; a sister and her husband, Phyllis and Farrell Barney of Aurelia, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
