Pauline June Newman, one of 11 children, was born June 16, 1918, in rural Anthon, the daughter of James and Kathryn (Redenius) Sharkey. She was raised around the Anthon, where she attended rural school.

On April 1, 1936, she was united in marriage to Leonard Franklin Newman in Sioux City. To this union, two children were born.
