SLOAN, Iowa -- Opal F. Copple, 97, of Sloan died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton, Iowa. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Opal was born Sept. 19, 1906, in Albaton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Cora (Olson) Lee. She was the first child of a family of eight. She moved with her family to Cottonwood, Minn., in 1907, and they returned to the Sloan, Iowa, area in 1918.

She married Jessie Copple on Sept. 19, 1925, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple made their home in rural Sloan and moved into Sloan after their retirement. The couple kept active with their travels in their motor home, golfing and playing cards. She enjoyed her family and was always ready to go out to eat. Jesse passed away in April 1995, after more than 69 years of marriage. She entered Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa, in January 2004.

She was a lifelong member of Skien Lutheran Church and was active in many church activities, having served as chairman of the general aid and taught Sunday School for seven years.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gordon and Gerri of Sloan and Merril and Betty of Pender, Neb.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several great-great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Myrtle Schmidt of Fort Dodge, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Kermit and Lucille Lee of Sloan; and a host of relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Mickey Copple; a sister, Gladys Anderson; and four brothers, Clifford, Ardell, Merlin and Dale.
