MAPLETON, Iowa -- Maxine Wessling, 76, of Mapleton died Friday, May 15, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Maxine Ann (Thomas) Wessling was born on Jan. 13, 1933, to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Flammang) Thomas in Soldier, Iowa. She attended school at St. Mary's Catholic School in Mapleton. She lived most of her life in the Mapleton area. On Oct. 26, 1957, Maxine and John Wessling were united in marriage at St. Mary's in Mapleton. To this union four children were born, Steve, Jean, Mike and Sue.

Maxine took great pride in her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and she enjoyed working on her genealogy. She also liked spending time playing computer and card games and reading.

Those left to cherish Maxine's memory include her children, Steve and Stacey Wessling of Sioux City, and their children, McKenzie and McKayla Wessling; Jean Wessling of Mapleton; Mike Wessling of Mapleton; and Sue Wessling and James VanCleave and their children, Jamie, Amber and Ashley VanCleave. Maxine is also survived by her brother, Wilfred Thomas of Mapleton.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth Thomas; her husband, John Wessling; her sister, Coletta Thomas; and Marie Flammang, who Maxine considered a sister.

Pallbearers will be James VanCleave, Larry Castle, Eric Greenough, Brad Jochims, Kevin Utterback and Jerry Hayden.
