6 June 1918Mrs Richard Edwards, one of the best loved women of Whiting, died at the family home last Sunday, May 26 after a lingering illness that had extended over a period of ten years. Throughout her long sickness, although she knew her ailment was incurable, she was cheerful and happy and carried sunshine into the hearts of her loved ones, so well as her neighbors and friends. Her death has left saddened hearts.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at two o"clock at the Christian church, by the pastor, Rev McDonald, and the large attendance of friends and neighbors bespoke the love and esteem of all. By special request Miss Jacobson, of Onawa sang as a solo "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and a quartet composed of Miss Jacobson, Mrs Wm Boyd and Messrs Beanblossom and McDonald sang the other quartet numbers. The pall bearers were Messrs Will C Kratz, J.O Harrison, O.A. Carter, Wm Riley, Harry Pratt and Dan Davis. Interment was made in the Whiting cemetery.
Sarah Ellen Manders was born in Muscatine, Iowa, September 25th, 1868 and died at her home in Whiting May 28, 1918 at the age of 49 years, 8 months and 1 day. In 1877 with her parents she moved to Union Co, Iowa where they lived until 1889 and then moved to Monona County. On February 2nd, 1889 she was united in marriage to Richard H Edwards in Onawa. They established their home on the Edwards farm east of Whiting in Ashton Township, where they lived until the fall of 1911 when they moved to Whiting. Four children were born to this union. The oldest were twins and died in infancy. The other two, Glen and Cladys together with the husband are left to mourn the loss of a loving mother and wife. Besides these, she leaves her mother, three brothers and two sisters and one grand child and a host of friends who will miss her in their every day lives. She was a real neighbor and never complained, but took life's duties cheerfully. She is gone but not forgotten--Whiting Argus.
