Dorothy V. Buss, age 89 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 2 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Karen Krusen was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Dorothy Vera Buss was born August 13, 1915, near Dixon, Nebraska, in the home of her parents, Alvy and Mabel (Swanson) Stingley. She was a member of the Methodist Church where she was baptized. Dorothy attended country school in rural Dixon County through the eighth grade. She graduated from Dixon High School in Dixon, Nebraska with the class of 1933 and then continued her education by enrolling in St. Luke's School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating in 1938. Dorothy worked as an Registered Nurse at St. Luke's after graduation.

On March 29, 1941, Dorothy was united in marriage to Martin W. Buss in the same house in rural Dixon County in which she was born. After a few months living in California, where Martin worked for the Los Angeles Railway, the couple started farming in 1942 in the Onawa, Iowa area. At that time Dorothy became a member of the Lutheran Church there where she was active in the Ladies Aid. They continued to farm at Onawa until 1965, when they moved to a farm in the Mapleton-Danbury area, farming there until retiring in 1979 and moving to their home on Ohm Drive in Mapleton.

During her years in the Mapleton community, she was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, participating in numerous groups there. She loved playing cards, dancing, gardening, knitting and crocheting, however, her greatest devotion was to her family. It was seldom that Dorothy was seen without her husband at her side. She was a loving mother to her children and loving wife to her husband.

Survivors include Martin, her husband of 64 years; a son, Larry, and his wife, Bunny, of Logan, Iowa; a daughter, Judy and her husband, Pat McAndrews of Sioux City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Troy Buss and his wife, Sharon, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Jason Buss and his wife, Jennifer, of Modale, Iowa, Rhonda Shults and her husband, Tom, of Ankeny, Iowa, Julie Collins and her special friend, Scott Hansen, of Ames, Iowa, and Ranee Collins of Sioux City, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Jordan and Jessica Buss of Missouri Valley and Gage Shults of Ankeny; and one brother and his wife, Floyd and Gloria Stingley of Lincoln, Nebraska; along with several nieces and nephews.

Those preceding Dorothy in death include her parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Honorary pallbearers were Rhonda Shults, Julie Collins, Ranee Collins, Sharon Buss and Jennifer Buss.

Pallbearers were Troy Buss, Jason Buss, Tom Shults, Scott Hansen, Dan Drenkhahn and Dennis Drenkhahn.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
