ONAWA, Iowa -- Gerald G. "Jerry" Miller, 85, of Onawa died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Chuck Layton officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Jerry was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Nodaway, Iowa, the son of William Clifton and Armintha Belle (White) Miller. He graduated from Clarinda (Iowa) High School and was employed with Safeway Grocery Store in Clarinda in 1936.

He married Mina Hammel in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. The couple moved to Onawa, where Jerry was manager of Safeway Grocery there until 1978. He retired after a 42-year career. Mina passed away in Omaha in 1980.

He was a member of United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club of Onawa, where he was a former president, and Onawa School Board, where he was a former president. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Jerry loved to travel. His trips included visits to Russia, China, Norway, Spain, Costa Rica, New Zealand and Australia.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Judy Miller of Aurelia, Iowa; a granddaughter and her husband, Danielle and Kevin Robb of Peoria, Ill.; a grandson and his wife, Cory and Julie Rae Miller of Phoenix, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Walker Robb; a sister-in-law and her husband, Lois and Leonard Fryer of Florida; two nieces, Betty Cantu of Loveland, Colo., and Carol Sue and her husband, Claude Swanson of Martinsville, Va.; two nephews and their wives, Richard and Barbara Miller of Urbandale, Iowa, and Ronald and Celinda Miller of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and two special foreign exchange students, Leah Heintz of Australia, and Tanya Sergeyeva of Russia, now living in Chicago.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Jan; a daughter, Janet; and a brother, Dirwood.

Pallbearers will be Earl Doll, George King, Ed Ferris, Terry Virtue, Charles Richardson, Dale Crawford, Adair Kaehlar and Stan Stukenholz.

Memorials may be directed to United Methodist Church or Kiwanis Club of Onawa.
