Myrick J. "Jim" Whiting

WHITING, Iowa -- Myrick J. "Jim" Whiting, 87, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. April 26 at First Congregational Church in Whiting. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service of Onawa, Iowa.

Jim was born Sept. 28, 1920, on the family farm. He graduated from Whiting High School in 1938 and attended Iowa State University for two years. He served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator in the 614th Squadron 8th Air Force during World War II, based at Deenthorpe, England. He received the Distinguished Service Cross with clusters, completing his service at Rapid City Army Airbase in South Dakota.
He married Margaret Patricia Keating on July 6, 1945, at the airbase, where they resided until October and then returned to Whiting.

He farmed and was active in politics. He served on the town council for four years, on the Monona County Selective Service Board, the local Co-op board for six years, on regional Co-op boards, the Western Iowa Experimental Farm Board, Farmland Swine Testing Station Board and the Monona County Farm Bureau Board of Directors for three years. He helped start the Western Iowa Farm Business Association. He served as a board member of Pleasant View Care Center for 31 years until his retirement in 2005. He was instrumental in expanding the options of care and showed his support by living in one of the duplexes for 10 years.

He was a member of Emery Johnson American Legion Post 481.

Survivors include his son, Mike; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Myrick and Marjorie (Willits) Whiting; his wife, Margaret; his brother, Richard "Dick" Whiting; and his sister, Mary Sara "Sally."

A memorial has been established at Whiting Public Library.
