E. Yvonne McDonald, age 88 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 8 at the Castana Community United Church of Christ in Castana with Pastor Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial was in Belvedere Cemetery, rural Turin, Iowa. Patsy Petersen was the organist for the service and Cathy and Nancy Hanson, vocalists, sang “In The Garden” and congregational hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace”. Postlude was “Rock of Ages”. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton.
Elizabeth Yvonne McDonald was born January 8, 1915 at Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of George and Edna (Muckey) Zediker. She moved with her family to Castana, Iowa where she grew up and was graduated at age 16 from Castana High School with the class of 1931. She was a gifted softball player in high school.

On October 28, 1933, Yvonne was united in marriage to James Russell McDonald in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple lived in Castana and then moved to the McDonald Family Farm where they lived for approximately one year. They then moved back to Castana where they continued to raise their five children. In 1985, they moved to Mapleton. Russell died December 8, 1988. Yvonne continued to live at home in Mapleton until 1999 when she entered Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, Nebraska. She resided there until her death, Thursday, December 4, 2003

She was a dedicated member of the Castana Community United Church of Christ where she was active in the Ladies Aid. Yvonne was a modest woman of integrity who possessed many talents. She enjoyed cooking and baking, often trying new recipes or creating her own. She became a gifted seamstress having sewn her own softball uniform in high school and designed and made a lot of her family’s clothing. She developed a talent for quilting and shared her ability by making quilts for her entire family. She loved music and learned to play the violin, harmonica, and playing by ear, having taught her daughters their initial piano lessons prior to them being old enough to take lessons from others.

Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Yvonne include three sons and their wives, James and Jana McDonald of Vermillion, South Dakota, Lee and Vicky McDonald of Coronado, California, and Michael and Marcy McDonald of Monticello, Illinois; two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Douglas Carlson of Novato, California and Kathleen and Terry Kucera of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, Marta Carlson, Rachel Wagner, Emily, Jessica and Sally Kucera, Glendon, Marion, Jason, Russell, Clinton, Matthew, Michael and Todd McDonald, Mark and John Carlson; 16 great-grandchildren, Megan, Erin, Connor, Tyler, Zachary, Matthew, Allyson, Maggie, Brenna McDonald, Jordan and Jamie Carlson, Zachary Wagner and Molly, Abby, and Grace McDonald, and Carly Kucera.

Also surviving are two brothers and their wives, Arnold and June Zediker of Sioux City, Iowa and George and Ramona Zediker of Burlington, Washington; along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, Maxine Baker, and one brother, Clark Zediker.

Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters, Marta Carlson, Rachel Wagner, Emily Kucera, Jessica Kucera and Sally Kucera.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Glendon McDonald, Marion McDonald. Jason McDonald, Russell McDonald, Clinton McDonald, Matthew McDonald, Michael McDonald, Todd McDonald, Mark Carlson and John Carlson.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
