Joseph A. Carlson, age 66 of Ute, Iowa, died Friday, October 8, 2004, at Onawa, Iowa.
Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 12 at St Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak with Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, Iowa. Lynette Thies was the organist for the service and Brian DeJong and Melissa Thies were soloists.

A Vigil Wake Service was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 11, at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Joseph Allen Carlson was born October 24, 1937, at Charter Oak, Iowa in Crawford County, the son of John Matthew and Violet (Reynolds) Carlson. He grew up in the Charter Oak and Ute area and graduated with the Ute High School Class of 1956. On August 16, 1958, Joe was united in marriage to Kathy Barnes at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ute. The couple made their home in Ute where they remained their entire life together. He worked 13 years for I.B.P. and 14 years for Monona County until he was injured in 1987. As a result of his accident, Joe retired. He then raised hogs with his son, Lonnie, and worked for various farmers in the area.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ute. He especially enjoyed the times he shared with his sons when they went hunting. Joe was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Joe include Kathy, his wife of 46 years; two daughters, Denise McAndrews and her husband, Frank, and Shannon Carlson and her fiancé, Dale Hahn; two sons and their wives, Rick and Peggy Carlson and Lonnie and Brenda Carlson, all of Ute, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Angie and Brain, Kellie, Jessica, Danielle, Kimberly, John, Jami, Jimmy, Cody, Kayla, Ciera, Savanna, and Lilly; two great grandchildren, Justin and Jack; two sisters, Nilmah Thompson and her husband, Duane of Ute, Iowa and Alice Thompson of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers, Norman Carlson of Ute and Albin Carlson and his wife, Mary Lou of Cherokee, Iowa and one sister-in-law, Bonnie Carlson of Ute along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jimmie, two brothers, Jack and James, one sister, Garnet and one sister-in-law, Sandra Carlson.

Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Angie and Brian, Kellie, Jessica, Danielle, Kimberly, John, Jami, Jimmie, Cody, Kayla, Ciera, Savananna, Lilly, Justin and Jack.

Pallbearers were Shawn Ohlmeier, Mike Ohlmeier, Steve Mauch, John Carlson, Roger Carlson, and Buddy Leisinger.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service of Ute.
