Another old friend of the Democrat editor has passed on to his final reward, Charles Burke of Turin, died on Sunday after eight months of illness. It has been our good fortune to have known Mr. Burke for forty years and through these years our friendship has been steadfast. He was man who was desired for a friend, trustful and true, always the same Charley. Life had been good to Charley: he had raised a large family of splendid children who today raise up and call his memory blessed.

Charley Burke passed away at his home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, after an illness of eight months. He was born near Quincy, Illinois, January 29th, 1865, the eldest of three children and died on May 23rd, 1943 at Turin, Iowa, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 25 days.

His boyhood was spent in Illinois, moving to South Dakota when a young man where he was united in marriage, November 20th, 1889 at Volga, S.D. to Etta Dell Edwards.

They came to Turin, Iowa in the fall of 1890 and have made their home in Woodbury and Monona Counties, except one year spent in Minnesota.
They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Nov. 20th, 1939. To this union eleven children were born, seven daughters and four sons, Clarence Burke, of Turin, now of Fairbanks, Alaska: Harry, Donald and Milford Burke, all of Los Angeles, Calif: Bessie Wallace, of Ida Grove: Cora Norby, of Blencoe; Bertha Kendall, of Moorhead: Florence Thoreson of Sioux City: Hazel Newman (deceased): Olive Newman of Oto: Mildred Leetch of Correctionville.

He leaves to mourn his death besides his wife and ten children, 36 grandchildren (28 of whom are in the armed forces):14 great grand children and a host of friends.

Charlie was a kind and loving husband and father, besides a friend to everyone. No one came to his door without a welcome to his table.
Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Turin on Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock with Rev Harvey Travis of the First Methodist church of Onawa and Turin, officiating.

Burial was made in the Belvidere cemetery. The Oldham Mortuary of Soldier was in charge of funeral arrangements
