Joseph Edgar Burgess
Joseph Edgar Burgess was born August 23, 1875 at Onawa, Iowa and resided there most of his life except for a few years farming near Mapleton with his brother A W Burgess.
He returned to Onawa in the 1920's. Mr. Burgess was united in marriage to Ella Mae Hogancamp December 25, 1897 at Blencoe, Iowa. She was the daughter of Daniel and Catherine Whitmore Hogancamp and was born December 2, 1878 at Burt County, Nebraska and departed this life February 1970. Joe passed away March 13, 1959.
Joseph was a carpenter by trade, and helped build several homes in the Onawa area, including the house where they resided. It was across the street from the old ball diamond which is now the play ground area for Lark school. It is just north of the old Illinois Central RR tracks on 4th street in Onawa.
Daniel Hogancamp lived down the tracks two more blocks on the south of 2nd street.
Joseph and Ella had five children. They are Fred George, Ruth Lillian, Mary Catherine, Robert Chauncey and Lula May. They were all born in Onawa and attended the Onawa School.
Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa is named for Joe's brother A.W. Burgess
