Monona County History-1982
Andrew and Aggie Johnson

Andrew and Aggie Johnson came to the United States from Bergen, Norway in the summer of 1882, with two children, John, 4 and Lena, 2, and his 71 year old mother, Anna Johnson. He settled in the former Solid farm (now Jon Roarson) 1 mile east of Albaton.

Andrew was a mail carrier, hauling mail from Albaton to Onawa twice a week by horseback, buggy or sleigh. He got $300.00 a year. John, the oldest boy went with his dad many times.

Andrew’s mother, Anna took all her savings of $2000.00 from doing housework for many families around Albaton to Sioux City and deposited it in a bank. That afternoon the bank went broke and she lost the entire amount.

Andrew and Aggie bought 100 acres one half mile south of Albaton and added on a few acres as time went by. They had five more children; Alfred (Annie Larson), Carl, Anton and Henry who died at the age of 12 years of diphtheria. All of the children went by the name of Anderson.

John married Myrtle Polly, daughter of Jonathan Polly who ran the Polly store in Albaton. They bought a farm 1 mile south and three fourths mile west of Albaton. They had one son.

Lena married Win DuBois and they bought a farm 1 mile south and one mile east of Albaton. They had 4 children.

Alfred married Hannah Hanson, daughter of Olanes Hanson. They lived for a while in Canada, and then decided to return to Whiting. Their farm was 4 miles east of Whiting near the West Fork stream. They had 5 children.

Annie married Fred Larson and bought a farm one and one half miles east of Albaton. They had 7 children.

Carl married Edna Schultz and lived on the Carl Rude (now Ethel Swan) place. They later moved in with his folks to help care for them. They had 5 children and 1 adopted child.

Anton married Pearl Donovan from Sioux City and lived in Nebraska for a few years. They returned to Monona County and had 5 children.

The Johnsons are all gone. One daughter-in-law Edna, Carl’s wife is 86 years of age, in pretty good health and lives in her own home at Whiting. Her eldest daughter Erma, lives with her.
