Winston And Florence Kalskett
Winston H. Kalskett was born on April 5, 1908 at Moorhead. He was the 12th child born to Herman and Mary Louisa Gilbertson Kalskett. His brothers and sisters included Fred and Martin Kalskett of Moorhead, Theolena (Mrs. Adolph) Thoreson of Moorhead, Mabel (Mrs. Ed) Olson of Moorhead, Augusta, (Mrs. Robert) McLachlan of Denver, Colorado, Maryann (Mrs. Anton) Christensen of Ames, Hazel (Mrs. Jens) Johnson of Belmond, Klara (Mrs. George) Bockelman of Denison, Millie (Mrs. Soren) Sorenson of Onawa. Helen (Mrs. Norman) Byg of Denver, Colorado, and Nel B. of Soldier.
Prior to Winston’s birth, his parents had lived at Adams County, Wisconsin and Fort Dodge, Iowa. They then moved to the Dunlap and Ute area where the family lived in a dug-out and this is where the 2 eldest sons, Fred and Martin, were born. At the time of Winston’s birth, the family was living on the family farm east of Moorhead Public School and graduated in 1926. At the age of 16, his father passed away and Winston was left living with his Mother and caring for the family farm.
Florence Mahler Kalskett was born on September 18, 1908 at Ute, Iowa. Her parents were Dietrich and Rosena Bockelman Mahler. Florence’s Father was born in Germany and at the age of 15, he and his widowed mother had immigrated to America and settled in Crawford County, Iowa. Then in 1887 he bought land at Ute and he and his wife, Rosena, settled on the farm. In 1918 the Mahler family moved to town and Dietrich continued to own and operated the farms.
Florence had 1 brother, Fred Mahler, of Ute and 3 sisters, Lena (Mrs. Henry) Kuhlman of Charter Oak, Alma (Mrs. Henry) Kunze of Ute and Ruth (Mrs. Duwayne) Waddell of Portland, Oregon. Florence attended the Ute School and graduated in 1926. She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
On March 5, 1930 Florence and Winston were married at Ute and they moved to the family farm east of Moorhead.
Winston was baptized and confirmed at the Soldier Lutheran Church as a youngster. Following their marriage Florence (who had been baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Ute) transferred her membership to the Soldier Lutheran Church. Winston and Florence have 4 children: James Allen Kalskett of Moorhead, Mary Helen (Mrs. James) Severson of Soldier, Anita (Mrs. John) Moorhead of Moorhead and Charles Everett Kalskett of Omaha, Nebraska.
Winston passed away August 21, 1968 and Florence still resides on the farm east of Moorhead.Submitted by Anita Kalskett Moorhead
