B.H. Danforth Family
The B.H. Danforth family is one of the pioneer families of Monona County.
Bern H. Danforth was born near Blencoe, Iowa on August 25, 1877. His father, Charles D. Danforth from Massachusetts, had settled in that community shortly after the Civil War. His mother had come from Ireland to the Onawa community.
Bern H. Danforth was cashier and then president of the Blencoe Bank, later the Blencoe State Bank from 1904 to 1953. Hen continued to work in the bank until 1966.
He was active in community affairs for many years, including membership on the local and Monona County school boards.
On June 8, 1908, he married Pearl H. Hagan, who was then teaching school in Blencoe. She was born in the Onawa community on July 11, 1885. She was Sunday school teacher and superintendent for many years of the Blencoe Congregational Church, now Blencoe United Church of Christ.
Bern H. Danforth died at the age of 92 on November 1, 1969. Pearl H. Danforth lives at the Elmwood Home for Aged at Onawa.
Their two children are Margaret P. Buel of El Paso, Texas, and William B. Danforth of Edina, Minnesota. There are two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren all living in Minnesota. The contributions of Bern H. and Pearl H. Danforth to the Blencoe people and community and the respect the people of the community have for them cannot be measured in words. Submitted by William B. Danforth.
