Wilbur Allen Hime
My great-grandfather, Henry Hime, was born in Ashland County, Ohio on June 30, 1834. He was married to Emily Ann Blough on December 2, 1856 in La Grange County, Indiana. While living in LaGrange County, six children were born – William, Lewis, Allice, Mary Jane, Frank and Ira. William died in infancy.
Henry enlisted in the Army on August 15, 1862 and fought in the Civil War. He was a private with Company “C” 100th Indiana Volunteers. During the war, he contracted “Billous remittance fever.” This was due to severe exposure to the weather because they had no tents for shelter from November thru January 1863.
Because of this fever, his eyes were damaged: and he went blind in the years following the war.
He was mustered out of the Army on June 8, 1864 as a corporal at Washington D.C. He then returned to La Grange County, Indiana to live and farm.
In 1871, Henry and his family traveled by covered wagon to Iowa and settled in Monona County.
There four more children were born – Harley, Susan, Wilbur, my grandfather, and Clyde.
My great-grandmother, Emily, died on May 23, 1900. Because my great-grandfather was blind, he lived the next eleven years with my grandfather, Wilbur, and his family. Henry was staying with his son, Frank, in Jericho Springs, Missouri when he died on February 26, 1915. He was brought back to Blencoe for burial.
Wilbur Allen Hime, my grandfather, told me many times as we passed by a cornfield north of Blencoe that he was born there in an adobe house on April 13, 1879.
Bill, as he was known to his friends, was a carpenter and brink layer by trade. He helped build many of the landmarks in Monoina County. His hobby was gardening which he shared with many of the people of Blencoe and the surrounding area.
He married Bertha Marley on November 4, 1903: and they lived in LeMars, Iowa for several years. Then they returned to Blencoe where he built the house they would live in for the rest of their lives.
Bill and Bertha raised a large family of eleven children on their acreage on the north edge of Blencoe. Their children are Lucille (Mrs Homer Black), deceased: William, deceased: Maurice:Miles, Mary (Mrs. Fred Brokens): Luea (Mrs Harold Sorenson): Violet (Mrs. Paul Vittitoe): Frances (Mrs. A.H. Clay): George: Bonnie (Mrs. Robert Sorenson): and Evelyn (Mrs. Bruce Purchase) my mother.
Bertha died on August 20, 1949. She was a kind hard-working person who was loved by all who knew her.
Bill died on July 14, 1963. Grandpa Hime lived to the age of 84 and was tending his garden to the end. He was a great person who lived life, children, and baseball. Submitted by Beverly Purchase.
