A Good Woman Called

Mrs. John Penney, a Resident of Mitchell County
Since 1860 Succumbs to Long Illness.

Mrs. John Penney, who had been in a critical condition for more than a week previous, passed away at her home in the second ward last Sunday afternoon. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. T. E. Taylor of Independence, a former Osage pastor and an old time friend of the family. Interment was in the Osage cemetery. The following obituary was read at the funeral.

Obituary:

Emily Pearce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pearce, was born in Dorchester, England, September 11, 1851, and died in Osage, Iowa, September 20, 1914.

When eleven years of age she with her parents came to America and located in Kenosha county, Wisconsin. In the spring of 1860 the family removed to Stacyville and in November of that same year she was married to John Penney of that place. Stacyville was their home until 1896, when they moved to Osage. Mr. Penney died in March 1900. Their children were: First, an adopted son, W. J. Freir of Crosby, Minn.; their own were Mrs. Olive McDougall of Watsonsville, Calif., who was with her mother the greater part of the summer; Roy D. Penney of Minneapolis; Miss Retta Penney, who has been a most faithful attendant on her mother during her last illness, and two daughters, Bessie and Lena who died in early childhood. One brother, Fred Pearce of Larchwood, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. George Penney of Little Cedar also survive her. In early life, her devotion to her family and her sweet patience during her long illness will ever be an example to those who knew her best.
