Mrs. Lars Peterson received a sad telegram one day last week announcing the death of her father, Mr. Carlsgaard of Meltonville. A host of relatives and friends mourn his loss.

He was over 80 years of age, but was healthy and strong at the time of his death. Mr. Carlsgaard was out doors chopping wood just before his death, he began to feel rather funny, his breathing began to shorten and sometimes he couldn't catch his breath, he went into the house and told his wife what ailed him, and just as he said the last words he dropped into a chair, dead. His funeral was held Tuesday.

In the darkness as in daylight
On the water as on the land,
God's eye is looking on us
And beneath us is his hand.
Death will claim us sooner or later,
On the deck or in the cot,
And we cannot meet him better,
Than in working out our lot.

His name is Hans Peter (or Petersen) Carlsgaard, born July 1, (or July 2) 1817; Died February 23, 1899.

"Old Mr. Carlsgaard of Meltonville died suddenly on Thursday last, presumably of heart failure. The deceased, who was in his eighty-second year, had enjoyed good health up to the time of his death, and had on that day been around the house as usual, doing such light work as was needed. He came in from outdoors, and sat down, making the remark that the cold wind seemed to strike right through him. A moment later his head sank down, and before any one realized it he had breathed his last.

Hans Peter (or Petersen) Carlsgaard was born in Egrup, Denmark, July 2, 1817. On April 2, 1848, he was married to Anna Elizabeth Jesson. The family came to America in 1877, settling near Kensett, and moving from there to their Deer Creek farm in 1888.

Two years ago the old folks moved to Meltonville to spend their declining years in rest and quiet, and just eleven months ago today they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and were greeted by a crowd of people that gave abundant testimony to the good will entertained for them.

The aged wife, seven children (three sons and four daughters) and forty-three grandchildren survive the kind, true-hearted husband and father who had a friend in every one with whom he dealt.

The funeral took place Tuesday and was conducted by Rev. Olson of St. Ansgar, the remains being laid away in the Deer Creek cemetery. The wife and children request us to express to all friends their deep gratitude for every kindness shown them during this their time of affliction."
