Dean L Thome formerly of Stacyville, Iowa, died at the Minneapolis Veteran’s Administration Hospital on August 3, 2020 at the age of 73.

Dean was born on June 29, 1947, the son of Wilfred and Lorraine (Johnson) Thome in Stacyville, Iowa.

He attended the parochial school in Stacyville, Iowa graduating with the class of 1965, never missing a day in twelve years. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served overseas in Germany. He then continued to serve his country in the Vietnam War, deploying in December of 1966. Dean was extremely proud of his service to his country, and later in life he struggled with PTSD.

Dean became a Dairy Herd Improvement Association supervisor as a milk tester, a business he knew as he worked alongside his father on the family farm. He did custom windrowing of hay and oats for many years as well.

In June of 1968, Dean married Nancy Roberts, and together they had three children. Dean later married Elaine Wermersen in 1978 and they had one child. They were married for forty years.

Dean liked playing cards, cribbage, golfing, and especially enjoyed bowling at Adams, and later Stacyville.

Dean is survived by his children: Steve (Netta) Thome, Bonnie (David) Kirtz, Darrel (Elaine) Thome, and Trena (Mike) Van Gorp; by eight grandchildren: Dustin and Connor Thome; Coty, Kaitlyn, McKenzie (Bradley), and Logan Kirtz, Hunter, and Hannah Thome; a great-grandchild, Averie; sisters: Judy Dahl, Jeannette Retterath, Beth Hackenmiller, and Amy Warrington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Lorraine Thome.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 9th at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, IA with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Interment will be at Visitation Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday for one hour before the service.
