Gjermond Jensen Mogestue was born in Numedal, Norway, in 1846 and came to America with his parents in 1852, arriving at his older sister's home in Newark, Wisconsin, on July 11 after a journey of three months and 11 days.

Gjermond married Louisa Grogard (they sometimes used the name Ostenson, sometimes Halvorson, sometimes Grogard) and they lived at Mona, Iowa. Their son, Jens Gjermond Jensen, was born at Mona on April 28, 1873. Gjermond, the father died August 5 of the year 1873. Louisa married Peter L. Larson Odegard in 1875 and Jens took the name of his step-father (henceforth, J.G. Odegard). At the age of six he moved to Dakota Territory with his parents to a homestead east of Buxton, Trail County, and then into town in 1881.
