Frances M. Conrad

July 21, 1938 ~ March 28, 2020 (age 81)

Frances M. Conrad, 81, of Riceville, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on March 28, 2020. Services pending due to the COVID-19 social restrictions. Arrangements will be posted at a later date.

Frances Melinda Ray was born on July 21, 1938 to Carter James Ray and Jewel (Kirby) Ray in Georgia. She was the oldest of five children, Geraldine, Anne, LeRoy, & Johnny Ray. She met and married Neal Francis Armstrong while he was in the ARMY, stationed in Georgia. To this union three children were born Steven Michael Armstrong, Teresa Darlene Armstrong, and Barbra Diane Armstrong. They later divorced.

She excelled in her role as a single mother, while working a variety of jobs and attending beauty school.

Later, Frances met and married Galen “Bub” Conrad at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on August 17, 1973. They made their home in Little Cedar, Iowa, and continued to live there until December 1977. They then moved to Riceville, Iowa, where they made their final home.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as many activities and hobbies that included: cooking and baking for family and friends, fishing, camping, gardening, canning, playing cards, bingo and visiting the casino.

As the years progressed, she really enjoyed sitting on her porch watching the birds, squirrels, and waving to those that drove by and visiting with those that stopped. She was especially known for her monkey bread, banana bread/bars and her lemon bars. She was also a member of several community groups over the years: the Community Club, Wa-Tan-Ye, the Legion Auxiliary, the Riceville Community Nursing Home Auxiliary, the United Methodist Womens group, and Garden Club. She was a very kind and generous person who would often go out of her way to help those in need.

She is survived by her sister Anne Densmore of Ackworth, GA., three children: Steven (Judy) Armstong of Ardmore, OK, Teresa (Mark) Klein of Riceville, IA and Barbra Hoglan (Jeff Harden) of Lime Springs, IA. 7 grandchildren Stashia (Wes) Maddox, Autumn Armstrong, Heather Armstrong, Jacqueline Klein (TJ Easter), JD Hoglan II, Jenny Rover and Mathew Eschweiler. 9 great grandchildren Makenzy, Wesley, & Ricky Maddox, Bailey and Cole Heideman, Dalton Breon, Tyler Klein, Peyton and Taylor Rover.

She is preceded in death by both parents, one sister, two brothers and both husbands along with many loved ones and friends.
