On May 20, 1925, Tom was born on a farm near New Haven as the seventh of nine children to Ellen “Allie” (Schweiger) and Henry Felix McCarthy. Tom graduated high school from St. Mary’s Academy in New Haven, Iowa, in 1942.
From 1947 he farmed with his father at the current family’s farm near McIntire. Over the years, he raised beef cows and pigs, as well as having a laying house for chickens, and primary crops of soybeans and corn on the farm before retiring in 1986. The family farming tradition is carried on through his two sons.
On August 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Catherine Mullenbach at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Immediately after, they moved into their new home on their farm near McIntire, where they raised their family of six children. Sadly, Tom and Dorothy lost their first-born, Rose Marie, at the age of 13 months. Tom and Dorothy lived in the same house their entire marriage until moving to the Stacyville Nursing Home.
For many years, Tom served as a lector at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer. Reading for hours at a time and playing cards were some of Tom’s most enjoyable past times. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking and making small items for family members. Tom also volunteered his carpentry skills for Habitat for Humanity in various states. For many years, Tom and Dorothy traveled to Texas in the winter, enjoying time with Tom’s brothers, Ed and Hank, and their spouses.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Dorothy, who currently resides at the Stacyville Nursing Home, as does their eldest daughter, Mary Underdahl. He will also be greatly missed by his sons, Stephen and Dale (Audrey) McCarthy, both of McIntire, and daughters Joyce (Jim) Berens of Goodyear, Arizona, Nancy McCarthy of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Ruth (Donald) Weber of Omro, Wisconsin.
