Died March 4, 2017

Betty E. Gast, age 87, of Osage, died Saturday, March 4, 2017, of heart failure at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Pastor Alan Schulz officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Betty was born February 3, 1930 on a farm near Rock Creek at Meroa, Iowa, the daughter of Chester and May (Denner) Williams. Betty graduated from Osage High School in 1948. On December 26, 1949, Betty married Birney Gast at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa. Betty was a homemaker and worked alongside of her husband, Birney in the State Farm business. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and Women of the ELCA. During high school, she was a cheerleader and the Homecoming Queen. Betty loved to play cards with her friends and socialize with her coffee groups. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in their activities. She was known for her ever ready smile.

Betty is survived by her son, Bryce Gast (and friend, Jean Canny) of Osage, and his son, Brock Gast of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her daughter, Becky Jo (Keith) Meinders of Osage, and their children, Shanlyn (Adam) Doll of Adel, and Judd (Sarah) Meinders of Vinton; her daughter, Bunita (Dennis) Sponheim of St. Ansgar, and their children, Shawn (Amanda) Sponheim of St. Ansgar, Drew (Kathy) Sponheim of Cedar Falls, and Kara Jo (Dallas) Hendrikson of Lyle, Minnesta; and her son, Bryan Gast of Osage; and eight great-grandchildren, Brevin, Jaeley, and Mykah Doll, Paige, Emma and Ben Sponheim, Kalan Meinders, and Sadie Sponheim.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Birney in 2011; and two sisters, Evelyn Dieterich and Beverly Allison.
