Melvin Unruh, 69, of McIntire, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 13,2000 at his residence while enjoying an evening together with his grandchildren, who were very special to him.
Funeral services were held on Sat., June 17, 2000 at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite Church in McIntire, Iowa with Minister Leon Koehn and Minister Raymond Ensz officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire.
Melvin was born July 21, 1930 in McPherson, Kansas, son of Alpha and Selma Carrie Unruh. He attended local schools and spent his childhood years on the family farm in Kansas. Melvin gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized on Nov. 8, 1942, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. The Church was always precious to him and he faithfully gave himself, in service to the Lord.
Melvin was united in marriage to Gladys Esau on Dec. 2, 1951 at Winton, Cal. This union was blessed with five children, three sons and two daughters. Gladys passed away on Jan. 30, 1971, leaving a great vacancy in their home.
The Lord again provided a help mate for Melvin and a mother to his children when he married Catherine Sommers on March 4, 1972 in Hartville, Ohio. He was engaged in farming.
The Church called Melvin to serve in the office of the Deaconry on Jan. 28, 1988, at Winton, Cal. He labored unselfishly in his gift and was appreciated by all.
In 1994, the Lord opened the door for them to move to Mclntire, Iowa. He enjoyed his last years here serving the congregation and helping his son and others with farming.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine, of McIntire; three sons: Frank of McIntire, John and wife Beverly of Atwater, Cal., and Richard and wife Trudell of St. Ansgar; two daughters: Karen and husband Gary Boeckner of Hesston, Kansas and Marilyn and husband Willis Koehn of McIntire; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Alpha Jr. Unruh of Burns, Kansas; and three sisters: Julie and her husband Curt Ensz of Scotia, Neb., Darlene and her husband Robert Esau of Atwater, Cal., and Clara and husband, Richard Loewen of Atwater, Cal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Gladys and one granddaughter, Sonja Gail Koehn.
