Sylvia Esther Gilbert, age 95, of Osage, died Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2017, at the Osage Alliance Church in Osage with Pastor Jim Stern officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Sylvia was born June 25, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Harvey and Josephine (Ostrander) Sperry. She graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sylvia was married to Laurence Gilbert on March 30, 1940, and moved to the family farm northeast of Osage. To this union seven children were born. In 1997, Laurence and Sylvia moved from the farm to Osage, where they lived on Division Street and later resided at Apple Valley. She has been a resident at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center since 2013.

After several years of helping on the farm and caring for her children, Sylvia worked at Anthony’s Clothing Store and later at Tesch’s Sundries in Osage. She was very active in the Osage Alliance Church, J.O.Y. Fellowship, Christian Women’s Club, the neighborhood MI Club, and volunteered and was resident advocate for many years at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, leading Bible studies, and entertaining family and friends. Sylvia was a loving, caring, and gracious person who will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Sylvia is survived by her children, Gary (Sandy) Gilbert of Osage, Marcia Sawyer of Plano, Texas, Larry (Patsy) Gilbert of Visalia, California, Marvin (Elijean) Gilbert of Kihei, Hawaii, and Sharon Silverstein of Phoenix, Arizona; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth (Harvey) Mild and Helen (Louis) Clark; brother, David (Pauletta) Sperry; daughter-in-law, Krystal (Steve) Nestrud; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Laurence, in 2013; one son, Mark; one daughter, Carolyn Knaus; two sons-in-law, Bob Knaus and Jerry Sawyer; two grandchildren, David Silverstein and Evan Knaus; her sister, Virginia Skotte; and her brothers, Harvey Sperry and Paul Sperry.
