RICEVILLE, IOWA — Marvin Shoger, 83, of Riceville, died on Jan. 12, 2017, at his residence in Riceville, Iowa. Funeral arrangements are pending, with Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville.

Marvin D. Shoger

Marvin Shoger, 83, of Riceville, passed away at his home on Thursday Jan. 12, 2017.

Marvin Shoger was born on March 5, 1933, to Clifford and Lulu Carter Shoger at his maternal grandparents (Ray and Ina (Jeffries) Carter) farm located seven miles west of Osage on Highway #9. He attended rural country schools in Rock Grove and Oakdale Townships and graduated from McIntire High school in 1952.

On October 15, 1953, Marvin entered the U.S. Army. He was sent overseas to Germany and was discharged in September 29, 1955. Marvin worked as a hired hand for several local farmers. In 1958, he bought a milk truck and began working for Little Cedar Creamery. In 1967 Marvin was employed at Farmer's Feed and Grain in Riceville where he worked for 30 years. Marvin really enjoyed taking care of the young calves while working for Dave Eastman as a hired-hand.

On April 1, 1961 he married Esther Milhan at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa. Marvin and Esther began their married life in Riceville, Iowa. Marvin was active in the community. In 1979 he was elected and served on the Riceville City Council for several years. He was an active member of the American Legion, Roy Gue Post 244. Marvin was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan; and enjoyed watching football and the RFD channel. Marvin also enjoyed gardening, was very meticulous taking care of his lawn, and baking Christmas cookies and canning with his wife Esther.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Riceville, daughters, Betty Bruesewitz of Rosemount, MN, and Dorothy Parson of Charles City, IA; sons Dennis Rassman of Forest City, IA, James Rassman of North Mankato, MN, and Larry Shoger of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Ardis Orthel of Oakdale, MN; sisters-in-law: Norma Shoger of Riceville, IA, Mary Lou Carnicle of Manchester, IA, and Bernice Walker of Charles City, IA; and a brother-in-law, Keith Marvin of Charles City, IA; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Stanley Shoger, a grandson Bryan Shoger, a daughter-in-law Nancy Rassman, and son-in-law Lee Parson.
