Donald Dean Whitcomb, age 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Sacred Heart Care Center.

He was born November 1, 1927 in Hollandale, Minnesota, to Harold and Myrtle (Goldsberry) Whitcomb. He attended rural school before graduating from Ellendale High School in 1945. Don worked at the Geo. A. Hormel Co. plant from 1951-1980.

He married Mildred Wilmot in September 1955. Don was a good athlete and excelled in sports, which was the love of his life. He participated in basketball, baseball, bowling and golf. He was a pitcher for the Southern Minnesota Baseball Team. He bowled in the 1967 World Championship, finishing 2nd place. He also liked hunting and fishing.

Don was a member of the Church of Christ and the Austin Eagles Club for 45 years. Don and Mildred were snowbirds and spent 30 years wintering at Orange Grove RV Park in Edinburg, Texas.

Don is survived by his wife Mildred Whitcomb of Austin; by two sons, Pat (Sylvia) Whitcomb of Faribault and Wayne A. Wilmot of Coon Rapids; five grandchildren: Brandon, Christina, and Pat Whitcomb, Suzie (Monte) Kuhuel, and Wayne F. (Barb) Wilmot; two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Rev. Eugene, James, and Roger Whitcomb.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Church of Christ (Christian) Church, 103 2nd Street SW in Austin, with the Rev. Dr. Stephen DeFor officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the church service. Burial will be at the Orchard, Iowa, Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be directed to the Church of Christ or recipient of donor’s choice.
