J. David Runyon
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA — J. David Runyon, age 89, of Council Bluffs, passed away on July 19, 2016, at the home of his son, Devon.
David was born September 30, 1926, in Centerville, Iowa, to J. Karl and M. Florence (Hurd) Runyon. On August 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to Dora Esther Kruger, daughter of Alvin G. and Esther Caroline (Walk) Kruger. David graduated from Eldora High School in 1945. David served his country in the Air Force from 1944-45 during World War II.
He attended Iowa State University and finished his college education and graduated from Upper Iowa University. David met Dora while attending Upper Iowa University. David taught various science classes, industrial arts, and driver’s education. He taught in Mattoon, Wisconsin, Grafton, Iowa, and St. Ansgar, Iowa.
In 1970, David joined the staff at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs and taught until his retirement in 1988. For many years during retirement he taught 55 and Alive Mature Driving. During part of this time he was Asst. Iowa State Coordinator for this AARP program. David was a longtime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
He is survived by daughter Debra (Tom) Mielnik, of Bettendorf, Iowa; son Devon (Magaret) Runyon, of Council Bluffs; daughter Doreen (Frank) Foge, of Gaithersburg, Maryland; grandchildren Lisa (Daniel) Miyares, Shaina (John) Lynch, Megan Mielnik, Cristin (Shawn) Kohlscheen, Melissa Foge; great-grandchildren Stella, Samuel, Matthew, Nora, and Makenzie.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dora on July 11, 2015, granddaughter Michon Runyon on July 13, 2014 and his parents.
Visitation: Friday, July 22, at 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Saturday, July 23, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Council Bluffs, Visitation at 10 to 11 a.m. with Funeral Services to follow at 11 a.m.
Interment Garner Township Cemetery. Military rites by Kanesville Riders Honor Guard. Lunch will be served at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church after interment.
Memorials are suggested to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or Hospice of Southwest Iowa.
