Joseph J. Spartz, age 89, of Osage, died Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Per Joe’s wishes his body was donated to Mayo Clinic.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:30 p.m. Following the service on Saturday there will be a time of fellowship and lunch at the K.C. Hall in Osage.
Joe was born May 5, 1927, in Stacyville, Iowa, the son of John and Bertha (Engbarth) Spartz. He graduated from Visitation High School in Stacyville, Iowa. He lived in this area his entire life except for the time he spent serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On January 27, 1951, Joe married Delores Marie Younker in Elma, Iowa. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus and also a 4th Degree member of the Knight of Columbus. Joe was a 70 year member of the Osage American Legion Post #278. Joe worked as a realtor and jeweler in Osage for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and playing cards, especially cribbage.
Joe is survived by his wife, Delores of Osage; daughter, Marilyn Spartz of Osage; two grandchildren;Taylor Spartz-Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa and Sammy Spartz-Johnson of Blue Island, Illinois; two sisters, Mary Klug of Omaha, Nebraska and Ruth Kramer of Rochester, Minnesota; one brother, Donald Spartz of Davis, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eileen Ziegler; two brothers, Paul and John Spartz.
