Hazel E. Hanson, age 93, of Osage, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2016, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Pastor Alan Schulz officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage. Burial will be at noon on Saturday, April 23, 2016, in the Richland Cemetery at Inwood, Iowa.
Hazel Hanson was born October 8, 1922, at Inwood, Iowa, the daughter of Elias and Alettie Olson. She graduated from Inwood High School in 1940. While in high school, she played a trombone and it is now hanging in The Music Man Square in Mason City. Hazel taught rural school for two years in Lyon County, Iowa. She worked in Frieden’s Calculating Plant in Hayward, California, where she platted nose-pieces on bombs during World War II.
Hazel moved back to Inwood, Iowa, where she married Merle Hanson on August 30, 1947. They both worked at the Abbott Laboratory in North Chicago for several years. They then moved to Osage, Iowa, where Hazel worked at Osage Community Schools for 25 years. She also worked as entry clerk for the Mitchell County Fair for 16 years.
Hazel was a member of Sons of Norway for a number of years, and was active in Farm Bureau Women’s Organization and on the cancer committee. She also served on a number of committees at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church when she was younger. Hazel loved gardening, baking, sewing, bowling and sports.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Carlene Hanson and son, Tyson, and his wife, Jill, of Clearfield, Utah; her son, Kevin Hanson and wife, Debra, and son, Skyler, of Arlington, Texas; her son, Kerry Hanson and fiancée, Robin, of Arlington, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merle Hanson; sisters, Opal Hage and Sylvia Graves; and brother, Noel, who died in World War II.
