Gene Wagner, age 88, of Stacyville, died Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be at the Visitation Catholic Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Stacyville American Legion Post 569. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Gene was born February 16, 1928, in Stacyville, the son of Anton and Isabel (Theobald) Wagner. Gene graduated from Visitation High School in 1945 and graduated from Loras College with a BA degree in Sociology. Gene also served in the Army during the Korean War.

Gene was married to Donna Huemann on May 5, 1956, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Gene was the owner, operator, editor, and publisher of the Monitor Review, was an Independent Insurance Agent and Tax Preparer, and City Clerk of Stacyville. Gene’s hobbies included tractor rides, reading newspapers, photography, spending time with family, dancing, listening to music, biking, watching his favorite TV shows, collector of cars and selling office supplies. He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Hale Penney Fuller American Legion Post 569.

Gene is survived by his wife, Donna Wagner of Stacyville; his six children, Mike (Nancy) Wagner of Eagan, MN, Gary (Valerie) Wagner of Northwood, Russ (Julie) Wagner of Apple Valley, MN, Karen (Del) Gast of Osage, Pat (Deanne) Wagner of Stacyville, Kristie (John) Greenstreet of Clive; grandchildren, Emily Wagner, Jared Wagner, Ben Wagner, Cory (Amy) Wagner, Matthew Wagner, Luke Wagner, Carly Gast, Jessie Gast, Steven (Rhondi) Wagner, Marissa (William) Mayer, Taylor Wagner, Cole Greenstreet; great- grandchildren, Coralyn and Zander Wagner, and another great-grandchild due in September; sister, Angela Lind of Boise, Idaho, and brother-in-law, Robert Mayer of Stacyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Paul Anthony Wagner; two infant brothers and an infant sister.
