Ed was born April 16, 1940, at Rockwell Hospital, Rockwell, Iowa, the son of Everett and Mary Bertha (Merfeld) O’Connor. He attended St. Patrick’s School in Dougherty, and graduated from Holy Family High School, Mason City, in 1959. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in France. He married Marilyn Elizabeth Corell on October 19, 1963, at Holy Family Church, Mason City.
Ed was employed as a route driver by the Mason City Coca-Cola bottling plant and in 1967 was assigned to run the local distribution facility in Cresco, Iowa. He left Coca-Cola to take a sales position with Mutual of Omaha Insurance. That was followed by a sales position with AAA that took the family to Osage in 1971. In 1973, he became the owner-operator of O’Connor’s Standard Service. During more than 25 years of ownership, he won numerous awards for outstanding customer service from Standard Oil (later Amoco). Following the sale of the station in 1993, he worked for Cooper’s Osage Chrysler and Wallace Business Forms. He ended his working career as a part-time custodian at Lincoln Elementary School.
Ed was active in the community as a member of the Sacred Heart Parish Council, American Legion Post 278, the Knights of Columbus, and the Mitchell County Bridges Mentoring Program.
Away from work, Ed’s passions were professional football, stock car racing and golf. Ed was a lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan. He loved “going racing” with his buddies. He and Marilyn were longtime members of Acorn Park Golf Club in St. Ansgar and Sunny Brae Golf and Country Club in Osage.
