Chatrina Helvig Halvorsdatter Vambheim was born February 9, 1827, at Vambheim, Ulvik, Hordaland, Norway, to Halvor Vambheim and Anna Hansdatter.

In 1852, she emigrated to America and settled in Mitchell County, Iowa.

Chatrina married Johannes Moa Pedersen Maakestad in 1857 at Mitchell Co, Iowa.

The couple had 4 children who were all born and died in Mitchell County, Iowa:
- Anna Marie Johannesdatter (b May 13, 1859, d June 28, 1868);
- Gurina Johannesdatter (b December 1860, d 1948);
- Jane Lydia Elizabeth Johannesdatter (b April 13, 1868, d 1952) and
- Martin Hannanias (b March 30, 1871, d August 17, 1961).

The family used the surname Pedersen or Peterson and later began using Maakestad (the name of the farm in Norway where Johannes had lived).

Found in the 1860 - 1900 censuses living on a farm at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1860: John Peterson 40, Catharine Peterson 31, Peter Peterson 5, Maria Peterson 1, Wm Oleson 43.

1870: John 53, Kate 40, Peter 14, Julia 10, Lydia 2; Anna Peterson age 20, hired girl.

1880: Chatarina Peterson 53, Julia Peterson 19, Jane Peterson 12, Martin Peterson 8.

1885: Cathene Peterson 57, Jennie Peterson 16, Martin Peterson 14.

1900: Chatrine Maakestad age 73, widowed.

1905: Catrina Maakestad age 77.

Found in the 1910 census at Vernon, Dodge, Minnesota: Lawrence Sosvos (should be Sorose) 51, Gurine Sosvos (Chatrine's daughter) 49, Carl A Sosvos 23, Cathrine Maakestad 83, George Skogen 15.

From the booklet "Meroa", written in 1977 by Gertrude Crowell, page 64: "In 1857, Johannes was married again to Katherina Wambiem. Their children were: Gurina (Mrs. Lorents Sorose) of Austin, Minnesota; Jane Lydia Elizabeth (Mrs. O. K. Haugen) of Osage, and Martin H. Maakestad born in 1871."

Chatrina died October 7, 1912 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

There is a memorial for her at Find a Grave # 49694288 with her photo.
