Haakon (Hakon, Houken) Staff was born on June 30, 1864 near LaCrosse, Wisconsin to Hans Larsen Staff and Anna Hovind Andersdatter, the second of their seven children. While young, his parents moved west to settle on a farm at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
He was confirmed on April 20, 1879 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. Haakon never married, nor had children. As an adult, he made violins.

1880: Hans Staff 52, Anna Staff 40, Carl Staff 18, Hakon Staff 15, Emma Staff 10, Betsy Staff 9, Johan Staff 6, Laura Staff 4 mos.
1885: Hans Staff 60, Anna Staff 45, Carl Staff 23, Hakon Staff 20, Emma Staff 14, Betsy Staff 13, John Staff 10, Laura Staff 4.
Hakon Staff died April 1, 1887 in Nebraska while homesteading with his father. He was brought back to Iowa to be buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. There is a memorial for him at Find A Grave #31821265
