Gladys Lillian Smalley was born October 12, 1885 at rural Osage, Mitchell, Iowa to George Harrison Smalley and Anna Marie Newcomb.

1895: Gladys L Smalley age 9.

1900: George H Smalley 69, Annie M Smalley 42, Harry H Smalley 22, Ethel E Smalley 19, Daisy M Smalley 17, Gladys L Smalley 14, Henry C Smalley 9.

Gladys married Edvard Halsteinsen Norby on November 27, 1907 at Mitchell County, Iowa. The couple had 1 daughter, Elvira G Norby.

1925: E H Norby 41, Gladys Norby 39,Elvin Norby 8.

Found in the 1940 census at Washburn, McLean, North Dakota: Edward Norby 58, Gladys Norby 54.

Gladys Norby died on January 20, 1951 at Vancouver, Clark, Washington.

Mason City Globe Gazette Obituary, January 25, 1951:
"Former Osage Resident Dies in Washington" -

Funeral services for Mrs Edward Norby, 65, will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. She died following surgery at a Vancouver, Washington hospital.

Mrs Norby was born Gladys Smalley in Osage in 1885 to George and Anna (Newcom) Smalley. She was a rural school teacher prior to her marriage in 1907. Since the death of her husband in 1941, she had lived with her only child, Mrs B. V. Spielman at North Bonneville, Washington.

Besides her daughter, she leaves her mother, Mrs Anna Smalley of Osage; 3 sisters, Mrs Will Madsen, Osage; Mrs Fred Knapp, Staples, MN and Mrs Ethel Helmer, Dallas, Oregon and 2 brothers: H C Smalley of Stevenson, Washington and H H Smalley of Austin, Minnesota. There are 5 great-grandchildren.

She is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. There is a memorial for her at Find a Grave #52068239.
