Mary Anne (Schmitz) Carmody, age 76, of Osage, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2015, at her home in Osage surrounded by her family, after battling pancreatic cancer.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Mary Anne was born September 17, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the daughter of Theodore L. and Wilma (Fay) Schmitz. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1956. On August 5, 1961, Mary Anne married Michael A. Carmody at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Urbana. Along with her loving husband, Michael, she raised five independent, bright, successful, loving children. Mary Anne was a speech pathologist in Cedar Rapids and after moving to New Jersey, taught special education in a resource room.

She earned not one but two, Masters Degrees while working full time. She was awarded “Teacher of the Year” the first time it was available. In 1993, Mary Anne and Michael moved to Osage. She was a very active member of Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Guild, and her community. Mary Anne loved nature, quilting, sewing, baking, praying the rosary, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.

Mary Anne is survived by her husband, Michael A. Carmody of Osage; her children, Kathy (Jack) Slinker of Indianola, David (Jacqueline) Carmody of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Deb) Carmody of Center Point, John (Debra) Carmody of King George, Virginia, and Tish (Jeremy) Owen of Grimes; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Judy (Jim) Dolan of Clermont, Karen (Jerry) Carter of Los Angeles, California, Joan (Keith) Zieser of Vinton, and Linda (Terry) Dunham of Urbana; and brother, Keith (Nancy) Schmitz of Urbana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Nancy Schmitz.
