At Rock Creek Church
On Monday Afernoon

Funeral services for George Gast, Sr., 74, were held at the Rock Creek Lutheran church, north of Nora Springs, at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, with the Rev. C. B. Gunderson, the pastor, in charge.

Mr. Gast, prominent farmer and stockman in this community for the past 55 years, died very suddenly in his home in Nora Springs on Thursday evening, May 13. He had been down town late that afternoon, visiting with his friends, and in a brief conversation with Harry Clifford as he emerged from the post office he remarked that he was going to go home for supper. His death apparently occurred as soon as he reached his home, where he had lived alone since the death of his wife on Feb. 11, 1939. The body was discovered Friday afternoon by Wilbur Sprauge, a neighbor, who had been doing some gardening for Mr. Gast, and was seeking further instructions. Death was attributed to a heart attack, as was Mrs. Gast's death four years ago.

Casket bearers at the funeral were Clydon Gast, Richard Gast, William Gast, George Gast, Jr., Wallace Gast and Birney Gast. Mrs. Alvin Christiansen sang "Have Thine Own Way, Lord" and
"Near To The Heart of God". She was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Lawrence Olson. Mrs. C.E. Garman and Mrs. R. Z. Nicholas, neighbors of the deceased, were in chage of the floral arrangements. Burial was in Spring Grove cemetery at Nora Springs.

George Gast was born on September 29, 1868, in Allamakee county, Iowa. He came to this territory 70 years ago and farmed in the West Cedar community north of Nora Springs in Mitchell county until 14 years ago, when he retired and moved to Nora Springs.

He was married to Bertha Roehr of the West Cedar community on Sept 28, 1893.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Tresmer of Amboy, Minn., two sons, Cliff Gast and Glen Gast, both of Nora Springs; six grandsons; two granddaughters; one great grandson; a half-sister, Mrs. Lucinda Moore of Nora Springs; and half brothers, Ed Gast of Nora Springs and Carl Gast of Charles City.

George Gast, who spent his entire life in the Rock Creek vicinity and Nora Springs, died at the last-named place last Thursday, May 13, 1943. Mr. Gast was born on September 29, 1868, in Allamakee county, Iowa, the son of Henry and Katherine Gast. He and his parents lived there about four years, then the family moved to Floyd county. He had spent about 70 years of his life in Rock Creek and Nora Springs communities, living both in Floyd and Mitchell counties.

On September 28, 1893, he was united in marriage with Bertha Caroline Roehr and to this union were born three children: Clifford and Glen of Rock Creek and Berniece, now Mrs. Robert Tresemer, of Amboy, Minnesota.

About 20 yeras ago Mr. Gast became a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran church, through baptism and confirmation. This service took place at the home of his son, Clifford.

Mrs. Gast passed away about four years ago and Mr. Gast has been living alone in his home in Nora Springs since. He died as the result of a heart attack.

There remains to mourn his passing, besides his three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; two half-brothers, Ed Gast of Nora Springs, and Carl Gast of Charles City; a half-sister, Mrs. Lucinda Moore, Nora Springs, besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services was held at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, in charge of the Rev. C.B. Gunderson, and interment was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs. Casket bearers were Clyndon, Richard, William George, Wallace and Birney Gast.

His wife was Bertha Caroline Roehr, daughter of Louis Frederick Roehr and Caroline Pohinoe, both of whom were born in Germany. Bertha was born in Wisconsin.
