Maym V. (Wisler) Sorensen – August 12, 1908 – February 28, 1997
OBITUARY-
RICEVILLE, Iowa -- The funeral for Maym V. Sorensen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel in Austin with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Austin.
Mrs. Sorensen 88, of Yakima, Wash., formerly of Riceville, Iowa, died Friday (Feb. 28, 1997) at her home.
Maym Whisler was born Aug. 12, 1908, on a homestead near Midland, S.D. She moved to Riceville with her family as a child and attended Riceville schools.
During World War II she worked in a defense plant in West Lafayette, Ind., and after the war returned to Iowa where she owned and operated a retirement home. Since the early 1960s she had lived in Yakima, where she owned an apartment complex and later owned and operated an adult foster care home until her retirement due to illness.
She was married and later divorced. Mrs. Sorensen was a member of the Moose Lodge and William Wharton Post 379 of the VFW Auxiliary. She was a seamstress and enjoyed gardening, listening to music and playing the organ.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean (Mrs. Dean) Dykeman of Austin; a son, Daryl Ford of Yakima; 15 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; four sisters, Fern Clark of Charles City, Iowa, Ota Hoff of Renton, Wash., Lafon Bartels of Little Falls, Minn., and Dorothy (Mrs. John) Baker of Orangevale, Calif; and a brother, Burton Whisler of Centralia, Wash. She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers, a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or American Cancer Society.
