Darrell V. “Mick” Wherry, age 85, of Osage, died Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage, due to complications from a stroke he suffered on February 5, 2015.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Mitchell County Food Bank.

Darrell “Mick” was born September 30, 1929, in Osage, Iowa, to Ralph and Laura (Lindley) Wherry. Mick graduated from Osage High School in 1947. He was united in marriage to Shirley Baldner on September 12, 1948, in Austin, Minnesota. In 1952, Mick was inducted into the U.S. Army 1st Division, 26th Infantry Regiment. He trained under the 10th Mountain Division in Fort Riley, Kansas, and later obtained the rank of sergeant. He spent a portion of his duty in Germany, where his wife, Shirley, came to stay for a time. Upon returning, he worked for the Mitchell County Road Department, Leuthold Clothiers, owned his own excavating business (Wherry Excavating), and prior to his retirement, worked for the International Union of Operating Engineers and Participating Employers as a heavy equipment operator.

Mick was also a private pilot. He was a long time member of the American Legion. Mick enjoyed woodworking projects, collecting woodworking tools, reading magazines, and driving his car. On a number of occasions, he had taken in stray cats and dogs to give them shelter and food. He was a very compassionate person and was never afraid to speak what was on his mind.

Mick is survived by his son, James (Debra) Wherry of Osage; his grandchildren, Sarah Wherry of Marshalltown, and David Wherry (fiancée, Teresa Ward) of Mason City; brother, Marvin Wherry (special friend, Karen Rock) of Ottawa, Illinois; and special friend, Jill Shedenhelm of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Shirley.
