Kjersti (Christi) Engebritsdatter Qvisle Nelson was born May 23, 1830 at Kvisle, Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway to Ingebret Nelson and Ingeborg Nielsdatter, the second of their four children.
Kjersti left Norway in 1852 with her parents to emigrate to America. They traveled on the sailing ship "Sjofna" to Quebec and then traveled on to settle at Dodgeville, Iowa, Wisconsin. That same year, 1852, Kjersti married Ole Torgersen Fagrebakken (b October 14, 1819 Buskerud, Norway, d February 26, 1873 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa) in Wisconsin. The couple had no children.
In 1853, the couple left Wisconsin with a group of other Norwegian emigrants to move west and settle on land in Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa.
Found in the 1860 - 1870 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1860: Ole Torgersen 40, Christie 30. $2000 value of real estate, $300 personal assets.1865: Tax assessment for owning 6 pigs X $10 per pig = $60 tax owed.
1870: Ole Torgersen 40, Christie 40. $2000 value of real estate, $500 personal assets.
After Ole's death, Kjersti married Guul Hansen Melgaardseie (born 1845 Sinde Aursdal, Norway, d unknown) on April 20, 1877 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. They had no children.
Kjerstie Hansen died October 3, 1903 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
