She was born on a North Iowa farmstead in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, on October 28, 1912. Leola was the third daughter in a family of nine children of George H. Rosel and Anna Marie Runge. Her grandparents in her father's line were Friedrich Rosel, son of Leonard Rosel, a Mitchell County pioneer and a founder of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Friedrich married Augusta Treichel. Grandparents in her mother's line were Emil Runge Sr. and Wilhelmine (Minnie) Wilde, pioneers and founders of St. John's Lutheran Church of Rock Township, Mitchell County.
Leola was baptized Dec. 8, 1912, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith April 10, 1927, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Brammer. After graduating from St. Ansgar High School in the class of 1930, she entered nurses training at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
