U.S. VeteranJerry D. Potter, age 71, of Osage, died Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.
Jerry was born October 30, 1943, in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Elizabeth (McFarland) and Alba Potter, Sr. He attended Riceville Schools. Jerry served in the US Army as artillery truck vehicle mechanic attaining the rank of SP/4. He received his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was stationed in Europe. Jerry qualified as a marksman with the M-1 rifle. In October of 1966, Jerry married Nancy Badker in Osage. To this union, four children were born. They later divorced. Over the years, he worked as a truck driver and contracted with various companies doing engineering work. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, physics and engineering. Jerry enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by Nancy Potter of Osage; his children, Colette (Jeno) Herman of Cumberland, Wisconsin, Hollie Bates of Osage, Spencer (Julie) Potter of Osage, Stacey Potter of Osage; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Alba Potter, Jr. and Larry Potter, both of Osage, and Russell (Cathy) Potter of Altoona; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his step-mother, Orla Mae Potter.
