Funeral services for Joe W. Dean, 83, who died on Thursday, February 3, 1983, at his home, were held on Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Belk officiated at the service and burial was in the Osage Cemetery where military rites were conducted. Champion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Joseph Wheeler Dean was born on May 21, 1899 in Xenia, Illinois, to James Madison and Caroline Roxanne Creekmur Dean. He received his education in Xenia schools and enlisted in the European theater during World War II. He was wounded in action and hospitalized for over three months.
In 1912 he married Leona Miller, in St. Ansgar, Iowa. They moved to Osage in February [not readable].
He was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad and then managed a ____uce station and was self-employed in his own grocery business. He served as County Auditor for 16 years, and retired from public service in 1976.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and six brothers, __ grandsons, and two great-grandsons.
He is survived by hiw wife, Leona, one son, Richard, two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Bernice) Hartwig and Mrs. Gordon (Lois) Haugen, all of Osage; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Bugosh, West Frankfort, Illinois, and Mrs. Myrtle Halloway, Xenia, Illinois, and one brother, Virgil, of Xenia.
