Richard “Dick” J. Nicholson, age 82, of Osage, died Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.
Richard was born December 9, 1931, at Riceville, Iowa, the son of John and Gladys (Phillips) Nicholson. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 29, 1952, Richard married Evelyn Maravetz at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, Iowa. He worked at White Farm Equipment in Charles City. Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. He loved old time music, dancing, telling jokes, and eating out. His favorite waltz was the “Beautiful Rose Waltz”, which was his and his wife’s “special song”.
Richard is survived by his children, Ronald (Diane) Nicholson of Waverly, Nancy (Gary) Bailey of Story City, and Theresa (Gary) Gauger of Bennington, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Nicholson, Sean Bailey, Jessica Gauger, and Emily Gauger; two sisters, Violet (Raymond) Steffen and Gloria (Ronald) Dishinger, all of Osage; and special friend, Mary Best.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Nicholson in 2009; his parents; two grandsons, Matthew Nicholson and Ryan Bailey; sister, Dorothy Kiefer; and brother, James Nicholson.
